“I like to maximize playfulness within a very narrow set of parameters. First and foremost, I consider myself to be a formalist. Fundamental aspects of composition, form and colour are the things that I think about. Working within an established tradition of geometric abstraction, humour is my way of keeping the conversation around formalism fresh.” – Alex Coetzee
Alex Coetzee is an artist and architect based in Cape Town, South Africa. He holds a master’s degree in architecture from the University of Cape Town and a post-graduate diploma in printmaking from the University of Cape Town’s ‘Michaelis School of Fine Art’. Coetzee’s art practice is interdisciplinary and expands upon his formal training as both an architect and artist.
At the core of his practice is an interest in the relationship between representation and reality. His current body of sculptural work explores relationships between geometric form, colour, and figurative association in ways that are both playful and precise.
