Overview

Nicholas Hales is a contemporary artist living in Cape Town, South Africa. He works across a number of disciplines, including painting, drawing and video/film.
He has a Advanced Diploma in Fine Art (1992) from the University of Cape Town and a Diploma in Graphic Design (1988-1991) also from the University of Cape Town.
He has held six solo exhibitions, ‘Alchemy’, (2022), 99 Loop Gallery, Cape Town, ‘Games’, Tokara(2018), Stellenbosch, South Africa , ‘Portals’, (2005) and ‘Adytum’, (2007) at Joao Ferreira. ‘Balance, Cape Town, Masculine and Feminine ‘, Association for Visual Arts(2002) Cape Town and the Irma Stern Museum(1999) Cape Town. He has participated in numerous group shows in South Africa and a number of exhibitions internationally including group shows in Paris and New York.
He has won a number of awards for his work, including a Scholarship award for an art residence, at L’Air Arts, Paris, France in 2019 and Merit winner, ‘What is life exhibition?’ South African National Museum, Cape Town 2002.
His work is included in the permant collections of L’Air Arts, Paris, France, Detroit Museum of New Art(MONA), U.S.A, Spier Arts Trust. and Nandos, South Africa
