(1957 – )
Kevin Collins studied under Stanley Pinker, Helmut Starke and Cecil Skotness at Michaelis, UCT in the late seventies with painting as his specialization. These men formed the basis of how he uses colour, composition and actually lay the paint down. Oil on canvas is the medium he uses as its final product give him a sense of work, subtlety of colour and surface texture which is not possible in other mediums.
Collins’s subject matter is collected from years of travelling (many miles from the age of three) and making small sketches and picking up little bits of visual imagery from packaging, transport tickets and sweet wrappers from Burma to Bangalore. Some imagery emerges from his childhood and early love of illustrated story books.
After graduating Collins worked in advertising and brand communications and stopped painting for close on twenty years. Then an unfortunate health trauma made him seriously consider what he really wanted to do and he started painting again. Collins started painting small works mostly of animals which formed the basis of his first solo show in 2003 titled ‘The Taxonomy of non endangered Species’ at Gallery Moja in Johannesburg which was a great success and sold 43 of the 50 works on show. Following this he has contributed to numerous group shows in Johannesburg. Collins exhibited at Stephanie Hoppen Gallery in London from 2009 until the gallery closed in 2017. He continues to participate in group shows both in Johannesburg, Cape Town and London.
