Prudence Chimutuwah- born in 1989 in Harare, Zimbabwe- is an emerging contemporary visual artist. Between 2009 and 2011, she studied at the National Gallery Visual Art School and began working as an artist, working mainly with mixed media on canvas, full-time in 2014.
Chimutuwah paints and works with collage, incorporating traditional Zimbabwean fabrics and decommissioned currency. She draws inspiration from the everyday experiences of women, ranging from familial obligations and marriage to economic ambitions and political insights. And so, her work mainly depicts women and the world they dominate or are subordinate to. She explores gender and how it adapts to the ever-changing socio-economic environment.
Chimutuwah has worked freelance as a photographer and in theatre designing sets, props and performance masks. She has also assisted in youth art workshops and exhibitions for World Education Inc. in 2015. In 2017, she designed and mounted mobile exhibitions at the Youth Games in Hwange, Bulawayo and Victoria. As an artist, Chimutuwah exhibits extensively in Zimbabwe and works on commissioned pieces for private collectors. Currently, she works in Harare, Zimbabwe from her private studio.
