Stephen Allwright
Contemporary
Overview

The accomplished self-taught artist, Stephen Allwright, has dedicated himself to his craft since 1998. He resides and works in the charming town of Barrydale, situated on the border of the Overberg and the Klein Karoo regions. Allwright holds a Bachelor of Social Science degree in Economics and Politics, as well as an Honours in Economics from the prestigious University of Cape Town. After completing his studies, he embarked on a transformative journey to Die Hel (Gamkaskloof), a secluded valley settlement nestled within the majestic Swartberg Mountains. For two years, he immersed himself in this remote haven, embracing solitude and freedom to fuel his creative explorations. Allwright’s preferred mediums are ink and watercolour, through which he masterfully crafts playful and figurative scenes that offer a fresh perspective on self-portraiture.
